The REAL Reason You Didn't Get That Job
You tried hard. You went through first, second, and even third round interviews but you still didn't get that job. Why ? That's probably not the first question in your mind, and, in many cases, you wouldn't know the outcome of the search to begin with. And even if you did know who the person was that got it, you might just assume they did and/or were better than you.
As it happens - and it's been observed everywhere, whether you live in America, China, India or Russia - it's NOT your Resume, it's NOT your GPA (grades) or SAT/GMAT. It is not your work history which, while not perfect, was in line and perhaps superior to requirements. It's not your references, your "alignment" or "culture" fit.
What you don't know can hurt you, Or can't it ? What you didn't know is the job went to the long legged pretty girl who was up against you and dozens or more other males.
This is NOT on any statistic, nor on any bank HR memo, but for those who've seen it enough, it' s a part of life. It goes contrary to the (wrong) general assumption that alpha males are the most sought after contingent on Wall Street. High achievers, target schools, and more horseshit. A lot of that is observed, but on one-on-one interviews, it seems the chick with long legs, and round ass "makes the rounds" better than any Harvard/Yale male geek, entrepreneur, or hard-worker. . Actually that goes up the ranks a whole lot further , to CEOs, CFOs, executives and government authority positions.
Soft skills, hard skills, personality skills, technical skills, IQ, they could't get you that job that "hottie little body" skills can get in this world. You've been out-ASSED and you didn't even know it.
You read the WSJ on flirting - the gamesmanship that no one learns at Harvard or anywhere, for that matter-
I've used my big, blue eyes and smile to get everything I ever wanted" says Ms. Wilson, owner of a Seattle marketing firm. "Flirting opens doors"
Experts define flirting as "ambiguous behavior with potential sexual or romantic overtones that is goal-oriented. In other words, we flirt with a purpose"
Women play the sexual card every bit as refined and calculated as any professional sport/activity for males that require extensive training and preparation (say, boxing or hunting).
Women are nurtured that life owes them as a "hot girl"
Women spend two hours a day looking in the mirror while the average guy spends how many minutes : 10 ? Less ? A little bit more ?
No wonder the average Joe feels every woman is a whore...because, the higher you climb on the attractiveness scale, statistically, the larger % of them are. [of course, just like in anything, there are outliers, i.e. women who already are into money].
What's amazing is that women can get so much without actually doing anything.
What would you do to have an effective gender-neutral HR policy ?
Put in gay hiring managers ? Maybe not. Little old ladies ? Better.
On Reddit to the post "All women are whores-just set the price", I saw this nice comment [coming from a lady]:
As a mother and a fireman-I agree.
Back to the Interview/Conference Room
Ok, what can you do about it ? If you are in the semi-final or final round of interviews, chances are that all of you who've made it will be invited to interview the same day. You'll be a small group, of 3 or maximum 5 but even 5 is a large number for semi-finalists. Generally speaking, the candidates here are practically equally qualified, so who goes back home crying and who doesn't it's not an easy tell. Suppose you spot that Miss Hot Pants, and face it dude, yours is a losers bargain. As much as you'd like to, you can't throw a cup of hot coffee on her face and watch her skin burn, because they'll say your're clumsy and stupid. You are not Bart Simpson either, to put needlesticks or glue on her chair right before she sits down, they will see you doing that plus there could be hidden cameras.
What would you do ?
I'm asking readers to please HELP ME somehow WRINKLE MISS HOT PANTS'S flawless performance for the day. I mean, I don't mind putting chewing gum in that chick's hair if no one's looking. Maybe I could spray her with ink or something-what can I use for that ?
Have any readers known of a chick [that took their job or promotion away]...
Remember what they say: Looks can kill. They can kill away your hopes and dreams, too.
"you are delusional if you think women have it easier on wall st" -reputable source
Well, Andy
This article concerns the "hot" women crowd.
They have it easier in life in general, and Wall Street is NO exception. They can "sway" the judges in their favor. Wall Street, main street, in the courtroom, outside the courtroom, in the boardroom, outside the boardroom, in the interview room, outside the interview room, pretty girls have the leg up the competition.
Hahahaha, this is a hilarious post. The guy-to-girl ratio in front office finance is probably something like 20:1. I would happily let a smoking hot long legged smokeshow take my spot, for the collective sanity of all male financiers. Do the right thing and be an interview martyr.
Your reply only reinforces my point. This is serious though, I'm fighting for my livelihood here. I got bills to pay.
This post is insane and so far off reality.
Financier4Hire -- why are you so obsessed about this line of thinking and what makes you think you're correct? You have posted similar misinformation numerous times, so I'm guessing something happened to you.
SirTrades,
Just because you haven't favored a pretty woman over an ugly one / or a man doesn't mean many others in a position of authority haven't done it. In many cases it's not even a conscious or planned reaction -men are prey to their unfulfilled fantasies-read Tues. WSJ article on flirting (Personal Journal) of which I quoted.
You say to be in the HF space, maybe you can tell me about "the skills" of Former-Stripper-Turned-HF-Manager Niki Marx of Marx NY Capital. She was a stripper at Sapphire New York years ago, and, accordingly she says her hedge fund was up 160% in 2011.
While this is an extreme example (stripper-right-into-hedge- funds) how many more months/years would have taken a male with a solid record (not a nobody) to have started a HF ?
This post isn't miles away from the truth in that hot women are generally treated better than any other group of people on the planet. But they are also treated worse. They get harassed constantly (I know--I'm one of the guys doing the harassing). At the same time, though, they get access to people they would never otherwise be able to speak with.
Who wants to talk to the dorky Asian kid that has never been laid, and has no extra-curricular interests outside of working 100-hour weeks, and practicing Gangnam Style on weekends with this dick tucked between his legs? I know I don't. I want to talk to the leggy blonde with a tight ass. Why? Because the annoying 20-something guys of the world can't do anything for me. I don't have a lot in common with most of them any longer, and I don't feel like mentoring kids that barely know the first thing about finance, but think they're destined to be Wall Street deities because they have a modicum of pedigree, a tiny dick, and an above-average work ethic.
But that doesn't mean banks hire good-looking, unqualified women. I mean--I would. Good-looking women sell business. Bring a few hot analysts with you to a meeting with some 40-something fund managers, and see if that improves business relations. Obviously, it does.
But women flake out. They leave the business. They have the option to do so when a VP or director finally decides to settle down, and start a family. And when they make that choice, they tend to marry a younger woman. Since they don't know many young women outside of the office and they work all of the time, the first piece of their selection criteria when choosing a mate is proximity. As such, they snap up the first good-looking, young analyst or associate that crosses their path, and get to procreating.
(To be read as if sung in the Lion King) It's the Circle of Life.
In any case, they're not taking your jobs South Park-style. And while their EARLY lives are easier, their later lives suck outrightly. The fall from grace as they lose the one thing that made people treat them special crushes them, so don't be too jealous of the few years they have a handful of advantages over you.
And bang as many as you can.
If I ever start my own business, I may encourage secretarial candidates to submit headshots. And I may also recruit chiefly from USC and Arizona State...for their strong business programs, of course.
Also encouraged to provide your height, weight, and details about your underwear...strictly for auditing purposes.
You've made some good points in here: +1
I wouldn't say though, that women later lives suck outright. They have so many "exit" opportunities. I don't think that being a soccer mom is bad at all, or being an "entrepreneur" -many of them do that.
Wait, hold the phone here, you mean to tell me that incredibly good looking young women get special treatment and undeserved preference from older men?
THIS IS CLEARLY A TOTALLY NEW AND UNIQUE PHENOMENOM!!! SOMEBODY ALERT THE PRESS!!!
If this is the worst injustice you've faced, you're the luckiest person on the planet.
Sack up and quit bitching.
The Real Reason You Didn't Get that Job: the other candidate was better...
.
The only problem with the "hot girl" advantage is that is usually goes away. Very few hot girls work a successful career and don't wind up losing a good part of their special appeal. Of course when it comes to Wall Street attractiveness is relative as well. After long days in the sausage pens any female who exudes more femininty than Amy Farrah Fowler starts to look hot. But there still are not enough women working on Wall Street so even hags have a leg up.
